Updating your DDNS Account

In order for a Dynamic DNS (DDNS) server to update the external IP address of your router/cable modem, a device on your network will need to connect to the service through the internet. The update can be accomplished through the use of specific routers or through a client on a computer.

Updating Via Supported Routers

Some stand-alone routers are designed to work directly with DDNS Services, allowing for the router for updating a Dynamic DNS account (i.e. DynDNS). A list of DynDNS supported routers can be found at http://www.dyndns.com/support/clients/hardware/ . DynDNS site or the routers manual will have instructions on how to configure the router to work with DynDNS.

Note: The router might need to have direct access to the modem or be set up as the DMZ host in order to accurately update your DynDNS account. Conflicts between the router and your ISP’s modem/router combo might need additional consultation with your ISP, DynDNS or the manufacturer of the router.

Updating Via Computer on Network

A computer on your home network can refresh your DynDNS account with your Routers WAN IP address. All that is required is installing an OS specific client on your computer and having it run in the background. It is best to use a computer that is typically on so that the DynDNS account can be up-dated immediately when the Modem’s WAN IP changes. Using a laptop to update your DynDNS account, might cause a DynDNS URL to point to the wrong IP address if the laptop logs onto the internet from a different network.

    1. Visit http://www.dyndns.com/support/clients/
    2. Download an appropriate client for your computer.
    3. Install the client, and enter your user name, password, and host name.

Note: Using a laptop to update your DynDNS account, might cause a DynDNS URL to point to the wrong IP address, if the laptop logs onto the internet from a different network.

Your home network will now be accessible from your personalized domain name through DynDNS. A custom domain name can also be set up through DynDNS for an additional charge.
